Skiing Deep Powder at Sierra at Tahoe

Today was a great day on the mountain. Sierra reported 26" of fresh powder overnight with a deep snow base of 112' and the skiing was awesome. I think it was the best day of the season (so far). It was in the teens so the powder was nice and fluffy. We got an early start so Jack and I were in the line at Grand View when it started loading at 9am. Our first run down Castle was wonderful totally un-tracked fluffy powder with faceshot's on every turn, top to bottom non-stop no wind or drifts. We actually took the time to shoot some cool powder skiing photos and videos today of friends at Sierra, hope enjoy the images. It's not easy to slow down for pictures and movies on nice powderdays, but your always so glad to have the images later on. After like 4 or 5 runs on the front side we headed for the incomparable Huckleberry Canyon. The snow was absolutely incredible back there, holy cripes. Fact: the snow is always deeper back there in Huckleberry Canyon and I'm here to tell ya, today was no exception, but Huckleberry Canyon is not for everybody, it's more of a backcountry skiing experience, yet it's actually inbounds. There are plenty of cliffs and big air drops all over, that's why us locals affectionately call it "huck your berries canyon"!!! If you wanna' play your'e gonna pay, as it's a long, long catwalk back to the main Sierra at Tahoe Base area and the Huckleberry Canyon returning catwalk is uphill in several spots depending upon just how far you go over.

Sierra at Tahoe

It was another wonderful spring day on the mountain today. Not quite as hot up there as yesterday so the snow never really softened up in the shadows of the trees, but it was fun none-the-less, especially on the sides of the groomers where there was like a 2" layer of sweet peel off corn snow. We have a little snow possible tonight, in fact it's coming down as graupel right now. Although the snow is disappearing from around town, the snow base is holding up very well with 102" being reported, no brown spots on the hill at all.

It hasn't snowed in in Tahoe for a while, and I hope it doesn't either. There I said it, I hope it doesn't snow for a while. Why? Well we have a decent snow base and the corn skiing is starting to get really good out here. So I'd rather see the snow settle down a little more so we get the perfect corn snow.

Sierra Buckle Up Big Air

Riders were flying high over Sierra at Tahoe today for the 4th annual Buckle Up Big Air slopestyle competition. With a purse of $4000 up for grabs, riders were throwing down big time. The comp is a benefit for Greg Smith memorial and to spread Seatbelt Safety Awareness. We got photos of all the action too. All proceeds went towards the Sierra Education Foundation, and towards building a signature feature for Greg. more Buckle Up Big Air Pictures

Phish Summer Tour 2010

Phish 8 Acoustic Set 

Today Phish announced their 2010 summer tour and I think it looks awesome! I'm thrilled to see so many 2 night Phish gigs too. It is so much nicer, and I believe safer when the Phish entourage of followers spends a couple of nights in one location, instead of relentless driving, so Kudos goes out to the Phish team for some really good choices. Totally looking forward to the Telluride Phish Concerts. I saw the Grateful Dead in Telluride back in the day, it's going to be a blast.

I'm hoping Phish tour fills in a little with saaaaaay a 3-Night run on August, 1st, 2nd, & 3rd at The Gorge in WA? My fingers are crossed, as that was my favorite Concert stop on Phish Summer Tour 2009!!! I won't be disappointed if they skip Red Rocks, they could have been a considerably nicer, friendlier host in Denver last summer for Phish's four night run there. Besides I'll be catching SCI there July 23rd, 24th & 25th!

SO, a limited number of tickets for the upcoming Phish Summer Tour 2010 shows are now being offered through the Phish secure online ticketing system via a ticket request period. Furthur & Phil Lesh's 70th Birthday Bash

Happy Birthday Phil

We have been hunkered down in Tahoe for winter, so I was really looking forward to the Furthur Concert at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, CA. I hadn't caught any Furthur shows yet, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

It turned out to be one of the best concerts I've been to in a long time, I seriously had a great time. This just may be the best post Grateful Dead incarnation yet! These guys have a special chemistry together, and it comes across in their live music. It may have been Phil Lesh's 70th Birthday Bash, but as my roommate put it "Phil was playing like a spring chicken tonight". I agree, Phil was noticeably happy, and smiling all night. When they're having fun on stage it translates to the audience, and we all had fun tonight. For one thing they sounded great, and for another I didn't expect the band to play till 2 o'clock in the morning and that surprised me. By the time we got out of there, my dogs were really barking! You could tell, even the hardiest dancers batteries were worn down by the end. The concert was a benefit concert for the Unbroken Chain Foundation with proceeds going to support Haitian Earthquake Relief.

On The Way to Northstar at Tahoe

We woke up to like 5 inches of fresh snow on Lake Tahoe's south shore. We decided to drive north up to Northstar at Tahoe for skiing today.  It was my first time skiing at Northstar and we had a nice day skiing on the mountain. There was a good 6 inches of light fluffy powder on top of the ski hill which made for nice conditions.
